How do we ensure that companies invest enough upfront to allow "curiosity driven" science to happen and not horde the results behind patents when something valuable comes to fruition?
For example Velcro was developed out of necessity for the space program, and (unless I'm mistaken) no company owns it, it's open source tech, it's not as if royalties are getting paid to NASA every time some kid buys a backpack that includes Velcro during Target's back to school sale.
Another one, getting an accurate measure of the precise age of the observable universe, would be really cool to know, but it's not something that has any monetary value in and of itself. But figuring it out likely has and will continue to have new technologies developed which do have monetary value. How does a project like this get off the ground if you don't know anything about what, if anything will come of it?
Only answer I can think of is some kind of nonprofit fund that companies could donate to and flaunt that donation like a badge of honor. That kind of thing already happens but doesn't do nearly enough.
